Historic Opening Day in the Maryland General Assembly as the 2020 Session Got Underway Wednesday

It was a busy day with both chambers under new leadership and a popular elected official announcing his intention to run for governor.

image 2019 05 01House Speaker Adrienne Jones is presiding over the House of Delegates replacing Mike Busch who passed away on the final day of the 2019 session. She is the first woman and first African-American to hold the position. Former Senate President Mike Miller has stepped down as the chamber’s presiding officer but remains in the Senate where he has served for more than three decades. The gavel has been passed to Senator Bill Ferguson.

The Association’s Advocacy Team was in Annapolis for opening day talking to legislators. The big push this session will be for a comprehensive data breach bill to strengthen notification and protection standards and allow credit unions to utilize a private cause of action to hold the source of the breach accountable.

download copyIn other developments in Annapolis, Comptroller Peter Franchot has confirmed that he intends to run for governor in 2022. Franchot, a Democrat, is the first candidate to publicly commit to running to succeed Governor Larry Hogan, a Republican who is in his second term. Maryland governors are limited to two consecutive terms.
