Allowing Credit Unions to Serve all Underserved Areas

On Friday, January 8, 2021, the MD|DC Credit Union Association sent a letter to support the CFPB's Taskforce on Federal Consumer Financial Law recommending that credit unions, regardless of their field of membership, be able to serve all underserved areas.

The league first made this recommendation to several Congress members in a January 2019 meeting while discussing the “American Housing and Economic Mobility Act.” As the taskforce made clear, and we agree, “there is no logical explanation as to why credit unions should not be able to serve all underserved areas.” Our "people first” culture sets us apart from all others in the financial industry, and we should be able to reach further into communities of need because we are best suited to do so.
