House to Hold Hearing on DC Statehood Next Month

Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton announced that the House Committee on Oversight and Reform will hold a hearing on her DC statehood bill (H.R. 51) March 11.

DC Mayor Muriel Bowser and DC Council Chairman Phil Mendelson will be among those testifying in favor of the legislation to make the District the 51st state.

The bill has 212 cosponsors and with support from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer it's expected to be brought to the House floor this Congress. Last year, the House passed the bill, which was the first time in history a chamber had passed the DC statehood bill. The Senate version of the bill (S. 51), sponsored by Senator Tom Carper, has 39 cosponsors.
