First elected to congress in 1981, Hoyer has been the number two House Democrat since 2003, just behind Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who also announced that she is stepping down from her leadership position. Hoyer was long expected to succeed Pelosi, but instead says he is returning to the Appropriations Committee and is backing Rep. Hakeem Jeffries from New York to take over as the top House Democrat. The House Democratic caucus is set to hold formal leadership elections on November 30 and December 1.

Majority Leader Hoyer is supportive of credit unions and regularly meets with the Association's advocacy team.
