It was nothing but blue skies and cherry blossom-lined streets at Sunday's race. Over 70 credit unions and state leagues supported the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Run, presenting a check for $400,000 to Children's Miracle Network Hospitals at the starting line. Since becoming title sponsors of the race in 2002, credit unions have raised nearly $9.5 million dollars for CMMH.

“The Credit Union Cherry Blossom Run unites communities, credit unions and Congress in support of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and the families they serve,” said John Bratsakis, Chair of the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Race Committee. “We appreciate the generous support of co-lead partners, CUNA Mutual Group and PSCU, and the hundreds of amazing credit union volunteers who donate their time to this high-profile demonstration of the credit union difference.”

The annual run brings Congressional offices together to support CMNH. As part of the larger run, more than 730 House and Senate staffers formed 67 teams and  engage in a spirited and friendly Capitol Hill Competition, sponsored by the Congressional Federal Credit Union and United States Senate Federal Credit Union, with support from Credit Union National Association (CUNA) and National Association of Federally-Insured Credit Unions (NAFCU). 173 members of Congress from 46 states, the District of Columbia, and American Samoa serve as Honorary Chairs this year.

It was a record-setting race for the elite runners. Jemal Yimer, from Ethiopia, won the men's race in a time of 45:36, running 41 seconds faster than he ran here last year.

American Stanley Kebenei ran 46 minutes to place fourth overall and broke the American record set in 1983. Kenyan Rosemary Wanjiru ran 50:42, the fastest 10-mile time ever on U.S. soil in a women's only race, breaking the all-comers record of 51:44, set in 2007 by Tebya Erkesso, by a whopping one minute and two seconds.

The Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run, sponsored by Credit Union Miracle Day, Inc, in partnership with co-lead partners, CUNA Mutual Group and PSCU, is known as "The Runner's Rite of Spring" in the Nation's Capital. The race begins at Washington Monument Grounds and the course passes in sight of all of the major Washington, DC Memorials. The event serves as a fundraiser for the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, a consortium of 170 premier children's hospitals across North America.
