CUNA National Awards: Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Award

State-level CUNA National Awards were presented at the Association's Annual Meeting & Convention on June 3.

The Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Recognition Award is given to a credit union for its social responsibility projects within the community.  First place winners advance to the national competition. Here are the winners by asset category.

$1 billion in assets
FIRST PLACE: First Financial FCU for supporting the new “Power Hour” after school initiative at the Boys and Girls Club of Westminster. First Financial staff volunteer their time and the credit union has generously donated $50,000 to provide laptops and tutors to assist students.

SECOND PLACE: Educational Systems FCU for engaging in a number of initiatives including providing 7,500 backpacks through Stuff-a-Bus campaigns and sponsoring over 120,000 students through a baseball reading program.

$250 million - $1 billion in assets
FIRST PLACE: Cedar Point FCU for its volunteer and financial support of Southern Maryland Community Resources which hosts special events for people with developmental differences. For Cedar Point, inclusion and social responsibility go hand-in-hand with financial responsibility.

SECOND PLACE: Freedom FCU for its social media-driven Freedom to Help Challenge which encouraged people to share photos and stories about their volunteerism. Facebook posts related to the challenge had a collective reach of 73,000 and raised awareness about nearly two dozen local causes.

HONORABLE MENTION: NIHFCU for rolling up their sleeves and painting exam rooms and a lab at a non-profit health clinic in Montgomery County as part of its RISE community outreach program which also helps families in need through the local school system and community health center.
